Change in your life can be hard. Especially when you don’t want it. Though change that you want can also be really difficult to actually enact. Might have a bit to do with the greener grass concept. But also might have to do with breaking habits of 20+ years is not that easy to do.
The one good thing about this difficulty is that it brings a real creative flow. These are a few of the pieces I wrote post April 2020, post the new life, post a different time.
- It’s All Over – Started life as never say never but soon developed into the inevitable. There really is no going back after what we have done to each other. The trust bucket is trustaphobic and will never be able to accept trust back into it. Like dry dust the water will just run off and not soak in. Not what I want but I have no say in it anymore.
2. So Far So Lonely – actually the first song I wrote for Post. It was born from my fear that I would lose my kids after the pain that I caused them and the stark realisation that I had no relationship with God and hadn’t done so for decades. These two things were very much linked with words that made it sound like I was talking about someone else. Sneaky hey š
ps) Sorry for the lousy singing.
3. Never Again – pretty cool instrumental that summed up what happened over the past 21 years. Had some fun with sounds I haven’t used before as well as some effects on the vocals.
4. Autumn In Sydney – this started life as Factors Of 60 because I was experimenting with playing a 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4 riff over each other and the fact that it will be after 60 beats that it resolves. Anyway, it developed as I added layers and what else do you do in autumn in Sydney but add layers. I’m really loving this song I must admit. I had a lot of fun recording it. There is a section where I move from minor to major to reflect the feelings felt by 2 different people about the same event. There’s a lot to this song but at least it ends on a high with the surf guitar.
5. You, Me, Us and the Rain – the first love song I’ve written for ages. The acoustic guitar was played using my feeble attempt to play like Knopfler. Anyway, had a lot of fun playing this. It is a lot less wordy than what I usually write but it hits the spot.
