From Good To Bad (And Back Again)

A very special project this one. The 3 songs are meant to be listened to as one (I will get that version posted soon). It basically works through the bible story in 3 songs.

The working names of these songs have a confusing element to them. The first track I wrote was called The Second Bit which ended up being the third part. The second piece I wrote was called The First Bit and it did manage to become the first track. And the middle piece was originally called Techno – nothing to do with the Jews in the wilderness.

  1. It Was Good – Covers off creation through to the fall. There is a version with spoken words scattered throughout, basically repeating the “it is good” line God says during creation and finishes with an exacerbated cry of “what have you done” when they give in to the temptation of satan. The piano arpeggio piece is one of my prouder moments, a real favourite piece of mine. The guitar work in the part where satan begins to win over I quite liked to especially when it transitions into the acoustic part.

2. Don’t You Know – reflects the time in wilderness. Not just the 40 years the Jews were in the wilderness but the wilderness mankind was in between the fall and Christs coming. The “vocals” were inspired by my favourite part of the bible, Isaiah 40. The music was an experiment into a more techno sort of sound but was a huge amount of fun. And I got the kids involved with recording them say a line from Isaiah which they enjoyed. Now, for the music nerds you may notice that towards the end of the song one synth goes off in 3/4 while the rest of the song remains in 4/4. I’ll try and do this again but make it more obvious in another song.

3. It’s All Good Now – we rejoin the story just after Jesus’ crucifixion but before resurrection and takes us through the journey to ascension. The ascension piece is borrowed a little from Unguarded Moment by The Church but I am pretty pleased with that part of the song. Also at the start you’ll notice that the 2 bar measure is actually 7 beats not 8, just done for something different.
